Mr Vaughan TannerMr Vaughan Tanner was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to The Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor in 2001. He leads a Berkshire wide vitreo-retinal surgical team, provides a micro incision cataract service and heads a general ophthalmic team providing care for acute and routine eye conditions. His subspecialist interests and recent advances include the introduction of sub-2mm micro-incision cataract extraction and sutureless small incision vitrectomy techniques for the repair of retinal detachment, macular hole and other vitreoretinal diseases. Lucentis antigrowth factor injections are now first line treatment for age-related macular degeneration and Mr Tanner is increasingly using them in other retinal conditions such as diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. Mr Tanner was amongst the first surgeons in the UK to use a new form of slow release steroid implant known as Ozurdex. This shows great promise in the treatment of retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular oedema and possibly age-related macular degeneration.

In the private sector he has developed a comprehensive service aiming to provide the highest level of personal care using the latest surgical techniques available. His main practice covers Berkshire and south east of England but he also attracts many national and international referrals. Private consultations and treatments are available at the following hospitals

His undergraduate study was at St Georges Hospital Medical School, London followed by higher surgical training at the Oxford Eye Hospital. Having completed higher surgical training, he went on to spend three years of advanced sub-specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and St Thomas’ Hospital, London. During this period he gained expertise in the surgical and medical management of retinal disorders including macular surgery. He regularly gives regional and national lectures and has co-authored a post-graduate textbook and atlas "Diseases of the Ocular Fundus". This textbook was awarded first prize as "Best Authored Post Graduate Textbook" by the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Society of Authors. He has previously been Lead Clinician and host for the British and Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons Annual Meeting and he continues to play an active role in post graduate education and research.

He runs a fellowship training programme in advanced retinal surgical techniques, approved by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
